PROFESSIONAL SECURITY OFFICER TRAINING PROGRAMS

California Security LawNew laws governing California Security Officers went into effect on July 1, 2004, with the passage of California Assembly Bill 2880. Persons becoming employed or currently employed as Security Officers in the State of California are required to receive mandatory training both before and after being placed on a security assignment.

Security Officers with Registrations (Guard Cards) dated on or after July 1, 2004, must receive 40 hours of training as follows:

8 hours of training covering Powers of Arrest and Weapons of Mass Destruction prior to a security officer applying for guard registration and working at a security assignment.

16 hours of additional training within 30 days of issuance of a Guard Registration. This training must consist of four 4-hour courses from mandatory training modules. These modules are Public Relations, Observation and Documentation, Communication and Its Significance, and Liability/Legal Aspects.

16 hours of additional training within 6 months of issuance of the Guard Registration. This training must consist of elective training courses.

As of January 5, 2005, Security Officers with Registrations (Guard Cards) dated prior to July 1, 2004, and new Security Officers, after their initial 40 hours of required training, are required to receive 8 hours of yearly training from any of the training modules.

The course modules Coachella Valley Security Academy offers are part of the California Department of Consumer Affairs and CALSAGA Security Officer Training Program. CALSAGA* certifies the training modules as in compliance with Business and Professions Code Sections 7583.6 and 7583.7 and Title 16, Division 7, Article 9, Section 643 of the California Code of Regulations.

SPECIAL NOTICE

Senate Bill (SB) 194: Proprietary Private Security Officers’ Licensure Requirement

Due to the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 194, a person who meets the definition of a proprietary private security officer must be licensed by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS).

SB 194, sponsored by Senator Abel Maldonado Jr., was signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on October 7, 2005.

Effective Dates

           People hired as security officers on or after January 1, 2006, must be registered
           on or after July 1, 2006.           People hired as security officers before January 1, 2006, must be registered
           on or after January 1, 2007.

Background

A proprietary private security officer is defined as an unarmed employee of a particular company or entity who provides security services exclusively for that company or entity and who meets both of the following criteria:

  1. He or she is required to wear a distinctive uniform clearly identifying the individual as a security officer.
  1. He or she is likely to interact with the public while performing his or her duties.

Requirements

A person who meets the definition of a proprietary private security officer shall register with BSIS. The criteria for licensure includes, but is not limited to:

  1. A fingerprint criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  1. Payment of an application fee.

 

 

Firearm Training
FIREARMS TRAINING FOR SECURITY OFFICERS, ALARM AGENTS, PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS AND PRIVATE PATROL OPERATORS

Before you carry a firearm while employed as any of the above listed persons (even if you are a retired Law Enforcement Officer with a CCW) you must take a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services firearm course.

We offer this course here at the academy. This a 14 hour course in the carrying and use of firearms. Our academy is a Bureau certified firearms training facility with a Bureau certified firearm training instructor on staff. The course is one day in the classroom and a half day at the firing range facility. We have firearms for use if you do not have your own firearm. Firearm permits expire two years from the date of issuance. You must requalify four times during the life of the permit. We can assist you with these requalifications also.

HANDCUFFING

The academy offers a 4 hour course and an 8 hour course on handcuffing and hand to hand defense taught by law enforcement experienced instructors.  Students will be taught the proper ways of handcuffing to ensure their safety and the well being of the suspect being handcuffed.

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE
HANDGUN SAFETY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Department of Justice California Bureau of FirearmsHandgun Safety is the Law in California. Every handgun owner should understand and follow handgun safety practices, have a basic familiarity with the operation and handling of his/her handgun, and be fully aware of the responsibility of handgun ownership.

Pursuant to Penal Code section 12071 (b) any person who acquires a handgun must have a Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) unless they are exempt from the HSC requirement.

In order to obtain an HSC a person must pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) written test on handgun safety.

We Instruct the following:

  • Handgun Operation
  • Handgun Ownership
  • Firearms Laws

HSC classes are on an as need basis, please call to set up a time to take the class.

NRA TRAINING PROGRAMS

We offer National Rifle Association-authorized courses in the following subjects:

  • Home Firearm Safety.
  • Basic Pistol.
  • Personal Protection in the home.

These classes are taught by NRA Certified Instructors. We give classroom instruction at our facility, and we have an agency agreement with a local range to do the Live Fire portion of the class at their facility. We stress Safety and Safe Gun Handling with all of our firearm classes.
